{"id":39,"date":"2011-02-05T17:12:18","date_gmt":"2011-02-05T17:12:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.socaldentalsedation.com\/blog\/?p=39"},"modified":"2011-02-05T17:12:18","modified_gmt":"2011-02-05T17:12:18","slug":"adventures-with-hearts-with-hope-peru-part-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.socaldentalsedation.com\/blog\/humanitarian-involvement\/adventures-with-hearts-with-hope-peru-part-1\/","title":{"rendered":"Adventures with Hearts with Hope @ Peru (Part 1)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Just want to share with you my experiences in Peru with Hearts with Hope.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Here&#8217;s what they are; copied from their website <a href=\"http:\/\/www.heartswithhope.org\">www.heartswithhope.org<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Founded in 1994 by Pediatric Cardiologist Dr. Juan Alejos at Mattel Children\u2019s Hospital at UCLA.<\/p>\n<p>The primary goal of the foundation is to instruct local medical  personnel in the treatment and care of children with congenital heart  diseases, as well as providing financial, educational and emotional  support for their families.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_62\" style=\"width: 210px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.socaldentalsedation.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/IMG_5398.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-62\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-62\" title=\"IMG_5398\" src=\"http:\/\/www.socaldentalsedation.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/IMG_5398-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-62\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">One of the successful heart surgery patients<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Staffed by volunteer physicians, allied health personnel and  community members with extensive experience in the treatment and care of  children with congenital heart disease. The foundation works in  conjunction with local children\u2019s hospitals often severely understaffed,  limited in supplies and unable to provide adequate facilities for the  overall population. Medical and humanitarian supplies donated by  physicians, UCLA Medical Center, international corporations and  community volunteers.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.socaldentalsedation.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/recover2008.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-46 alignleft\" title=\"Patient's recovering together\" src=\"http:\/\/www.socaldentalsedation.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/recover2008-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This is my 2nd mission with them, and it&#8217;s been a wonderful experience both times!\u00a0 My first time with them, Dr. Eric Sung, co-director of UCLA&#8217;s hospital dentistry, had asked me to come with them to help with the outreach team.\u00a0 I helped with dental exams, treatment and also provided anesthesia to the children. Most of the staff there started to look at me weird when I was providing anesthesia, and when all the patients that needed anesthesia was done, I was extracting teeth and placing fillings.\u00a0 They forget I am still a dentist!<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_54\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.socaldentalsedation.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/dentalteam2008.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-54\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-54\" title=\"dentalteam2008\" src=\"http:\/\/www.socaldentalsedation.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/dentalteam2008-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-54\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Our Dental Outreach Team, Peru 2008<\/p><\/div>\n<div id=\"attachment_48\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.socaldentalsedation.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/street.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-48\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-48\" title=\"Streets of Arequipa\" src=\"http:\/\/www.socaldentalsedation.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/street-300x240.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"240\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-48\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Typical street of Arequipa <\/p><\/div>\n<p>Peru is generally a well developed countries in the big cities.\u00a0 They have a lot of the modern conveniences you&#8217;ll usually find in big cities.\u00a0 In my first visit, the government had held a lot of our medication and supplies for &#8220;inspection&#8221;.\u00a0 So I didn&#8217;t have any drugs available on our first day in outreach!\u00a0 We went to a pharmacy around the corner from the hotel and acquired a few ampules of Ketamine, Midazolam, and some other emergency drugs.\u00a0\u00a0 Didn&#8217;t ask for license or &#8220;DEA&#8221;.\u00a0 I thought it was hilarious, but they probably gave it to us knowing we were foreign volunteer doctors.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_47\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.socaldentalsedation.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/church.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-47\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-47\" title=\"Arequipa Church\" src=\"http:\/\/www.socaldentalsedation.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/church-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-47\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Main church in Arequipa at night.  Quite beautiful isn&#39;t it? <\/p><\/div>\n<p>Peruvian food definitely has some interesting characteristics.\u00a0 Lots of potato in the diet, and their specialty drink is Pisco Sour.\u00a0 <strong> <\/strong>A pisco sour is cocktail containing pisco, lemon or lime juice, egg whites, simple syrup, and bitters.\u00a0 It tastes great!\u00a0 Another cuisine that&#8217;s interesting is Cuy, its a guinea pig!<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_53\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.socaldentalsedation.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/cuy.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-53\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-53 \" title=\"Fried Cuy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.socaldentalsedation.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/cuy-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-53\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Yummy Cuy with Peruvian Corn and Potato.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>I definitely had some fried guinea pig.\u00a0 It tastes like chicken :p\u00a0 It was pretty good actually, other meats like alpaca kinda tastes like lamb.<\/p>\n<p>After a weeks work, some of us went to Macchu Picchu.\u00a0 We stopped by Cusco and did some sightseeing.\u00a0 Definitely observed more of the local culture here.\u00a0 There were also remnants of the Inca culture all around.\u00a0 Inca temples were made so precise with no mortar or cement.\u00a0 The stones were cut and smoothed to fit each other by the micrometers.\u00a0 So when the Spaniards try to blow up their temple with cannons, only very little would break off.\u00a0 Instead, they just built cathedrals and buildings over the temple.\u00a0 If you visit you&#8217;ll be amazed at the architecture these Inca&#8217;s were able to build.\u00a0 Macchu Picchu is definitely worth being one of the 7 modern wonders of the world.\u00a0 It was huge city built with the same stone work.\u00a0 Those who really want to experience in full, should definitely get in shape for the hike!\u00a0 It&#8217;s high altitude and steep slopes almost killed me :p\u00a0 I was gasping for air most of the time, and left in the dust by those more fit.\u00a0 I didn&#8217;t give up and made it to the top, but by then it was time to go&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Next blog I&#8217;ll go more into my second trip with them!<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_71\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.socaldentalsedation.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/maccupiccu.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-71\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-71\" title=\"maccupiccu\" src=\"http:\/\/www.socaldentalsedation.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/maccupiccu-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-71\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The tall peak is Wynna Picchu, wanted to go up there but they closed it off due to weather conditions.<\/p><\/div>\n<div id=\"attachment_58\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.socaldentalsedation.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/girlwithllama.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-58\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-58\" title=\"girlwithllama\" src=\"http:\/\/www.socaldentalsedation.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/girlwithllama-300x211.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"211\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-58\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">My attempt at being National Geographic photographer.<\/p><\/div>\n<div id=\"attachment_57\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.socaldentalsedation.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/llamas.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-57\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-57\" title=\"llamas\" src=\"http:\/\/www.socaldentalsedation.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/llamas-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-57\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">What&#39;s without hanging out with llamas and alpacas in Peru?<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Just want to share with you my experiences in Peru with Hearts with Hope.
